DragonHeart Homes are part of the Prisoners Building Homes programme, building sustainable, low carbon houses whilst providing prisoners with job opportunities. This aims to reduce re-offending rates by supplying nationally accredited training and a source of income, increasing the chance of post-release employment and resettlement.
As of march 2022, the national reoffending rate was 25.1% amongst adults, with an estimated social and economic cost for reoffenders of £16.7 billion in the 12-month follow up period. The pressure on prison systems is immense, and by 2027 are predicted to house a population of 100,000 people in the UK. Prisoners Building Homes is predicted to reduce this re-offending rate to 10%, reducing the number of reoffenders within this workforce scheme by 2.5. Additionally, with limited access to sources of income, prisoners struggle with routine, purpose and well-being. By tackling these, the chance of reoffending reduces massively as it provides a motivation for getting out of the system.
Under this programme 100% of prisoners said it had a positive impact on their wellbeing.
At DragonHeart Homes we have made the commitment to improving the lives of prisoners under the scheme, and in doing so, reduce the pressure on the ministry of justice regarding prison systems. This means committing to providing prisoners with the training required to receive genuine construction related qualifications. Reducing reoffending rates through paid work enhances employability, skillsets, and mindsets. DragonHeart Homes promises to alleviate the use of expensive and inappropriate temporary accommodation for employed prisoners, further reducing the costs of prisoners.
